On Thursday, October 23, PJ Tankard, Color Guard Caption Head for the Madison Scouts, presented “Color Guard Tips & Tricks for Band Directors” at the Wisconsin State Music Conference. The session, sponsored by Forward Performing Arts, attracted approximately 35 attendees — a mix of college students, future music educators, and current band directors.
Drawing from his extensive experience with the Madison Scouts, AMP Winterguard, Rutgers University Marching Band, and numerous high school programs across the Northeast, Tankard provided practical insights on building and managing successful color guard programs. Participants learned key terminology for color guard equipment (flags, rifles, and sabers), proper care and maintenance techniques, foundational dance terms and movements, and effective instructional strategies.
“Teaching color guard shouldn’t be intimidating for band directors,” said Tankard. “I’m hopeful that the tools I shared will help directors feel more confident supporting the growth and education of their color guard students across the state.”

During the session, Tankard also worked directly with attendees to demonstrate fundamental flag techniques. Looking ahead to the 2026 conference, he plans to return with a hands-on session focused on basic flag, rifle, and saber exercises. “I cannot wait to return to WSMC to provide more interactive, skill-based training for band directors,” he added.
David Lofy, Programs Director for Forward Performing Arts, reaffirmed the organization’s ongoing commitment to music education saying, “We’re proud to continue our partnership with WMEA’s educational initiatives. Forward Performing Arts will keep leveraging our expertise and resources to support marching band students and directors throughout Wisconsin.”
