Madison Scouts Partners with WeScanFiles to Digitize Archives

With 85 years of photos, articles, and artifacts, the Madison Scouts have a rich collection of historical content that needed to be captured and preserved. As a sponsor of Drum Corps International (DCI), WeScanFiles was already familiar and supportive of the drum corps activity.

“We had dozens of plastic tubs filled with content,” said Scouts Executive Director Chris Komnick. “We have had many starts and stops to get it digitized, but we needed a solution to get our history archives professionally scanned and accessible.”

In the spring of 2021, Komnick reached out to Blake Crenshaw of WeScanFiles and discussed the project. Soon thereafter a van-load of bins was delivered to the WeScanFiles warehouse in Fort Worth, Texas to initiate a year-long process.

“I was thrilled to be contacted by the Madison Scouts,” said WeScanFiles’ owner Blake Crenshaw. “As an alumnus of the drum corps activity, I am always seeking ways that I can give back. Helping the Scouts digitize their valuable archives was both a privilege and an exciting historical exploration.”

Founded in 1920, the Madison Scouts have been a continuously running operation since 1938. Concurrently, a well-developed archive of photographs, newspaper articles, letters, and memorabilia have been diligently collected and maintained for over 85 years. It was time to have them digitally captured, archived and stored, and eventually made available publicly.

“The team at WeScanFiles tackled the project with enthusiasm and an attention to detail,” added Komnick. “The archives were carefully handled and digitized. The resulting quality scans are just incredible to peruse with wonderment.”

“I am so happy that we could help the Madison Scouts capture and preserve their rich history,” said Crenshaw. “It’s just another way for me to give back to the activity I love.”

The Madison Scouts historical archives are now captured and digitized and being utilized as the corps continues to research and preserve its history. Plans are being made to present and provide access to the digitized archives to their alumni and fans.
