2008 - February Camp Report

Madison, Wisconsin has already set a new all-time record for snowfall; but for this past camp weekend, the adverse weather was not in our backyard. Winter storms in the Northeast and in Missouri caused several travel delays and cancellations. But by Saturday afternoon, nearly everyone was at the school working towards our many musical goals we had set for the camp.Along with polishing a few revisions on the opening number, the corps worked through the second production for the first time. Not only will this piece explore an impressive range of musical artistry, but it will also offer the members an opportunity to demonstrate the true extent of their talents. An exploration of emotional connectivity, the second production has the ability to reach the audience in a multitude of ways. The horn line also learned the concert piece, which will be a medley of Scout favorites including Malagueña, Ballet in Brass and Strawberry Soup. “Traditionally played in standstill performances, Scout classics are always a treat for our alumni and long-time fans” said Executive Director Jeff Spanos, “Plus the corps has a great time playing them and connecting with their history.”

Ramiro Conducting

The highlight of the weekend was the introduction of Program Coordinator Ramiro Barrera who provided his insight into the process and development of the 2008 program. Saturday evening’s rehearsal proved even more special when Ramiro conducted the horn line through the second production. Emphasizing the need to capture the passion of the Latin culture within their performance, Ramiro’s time at the podium was an inspired learning process for the members. The volunteer staff again proved to be an invaluable resource as they prepared meals, coordinated airport transportation, shuttled equipment and took uniform measurements for the corps. Sincere thanks again to this great group of people who seem to just show up and get the job done! While near completion, the corps is still looking to fill one tenor spot and one position in the front ensemble. We will continue to audition brass players for alternate spots and are actively recruiting for our next guard auditions on April 18-20 in Madison. Look for our booth at the upcoming WGI Championships in Dayton, OH on April 10-12.
